While sweeping the entry way of my home
Wondering where this dirt came from
I couldn't help but notice how old
Our Welcome mat had become
I thought for a moment about tossing out
This worn out mat that lay silent and old
It weathered the cold and took the heat
And the constant treading of many a feet
The more I thought the more I knew
That this old mat should not be replaced
It belonged where it lay for many a year
With memories to not be erased
This mat sent me off to my day of work
And welcomed me home at the end of the day
It said hello to many a friend
And wished them happiness as they went away
So many times our friendships end
They wear their welcome out fast
But like my little worn out mat
I think that they should last
Casting off a friend so fast
As if worn out and old
Is just an example of heartless folk
Whose love has just grown cold
As I looked down at my welcome mat
And pondered friendships near
I knew that I couldn't toss it out
No matter worn and no matter wear
And I'll keep it where it's been for years
Weathering cold and heat
My precious worn out welcome mat
So pretty, aged and sweet!
